The architecture of this building was determined by the specific character of this particularly inspiring place. On the one hand, it moors to the city of Besançon, on the other, it opens in terraces onto the surrounding landscape. The writing plays on the curves and the elevation of the land on a double slope. The idea was thus to build two buildings blocks -one for the teaching rooms, the other for amphitheaters and the accompanying rooms – which surround the plot to welcome in its center the living areas of the students. These spaces are open on the outside, warm, friendly, bathed in light. They are extended by gardens that spread along the slope in the perspective of the doline to make it an inhabited landscape, inviting to exchange and encounter.
The project features 5 amphitheatres built in hornbeam, a local wood, a choice that provides a feeling of well-being, softness and clarity with excellent acoustics.
The buildings are also inspired by the soul of the place, playing on the effects of light and colors by offering a blue-grey palette characteristic of the region. The materials combine tradition and modernity from one space to another. The reflections of the Chailluz stone, emblematic of Besançon respond to the subtle shimmering of the different types of aluminium used. A project that forges a privileged link between the city and the landscape, at the service of knowledge and research.
